Which SIP Manufacturer Is Best?

No single SIP manufacturer is best for all projects. The right manufacturer for a residential custom home in Virginia is not the right manufacturer for a cold storage facility in Texas or a military installation in California. The question that matters is: which manufacturer is best for this specific project?

The factors that determine the answer

Panel specification match. The manufacturer must be able to produce the exact panel configuration the project requires — core type, thickness, any custom features. Not all manufacturers produce all configurations.

Delivered cost. Panel price plus freight to the project location. Freight cost varies significantly by distance from the manufacturer’s production facility. A manufacturer with the lowest panel price but a 1,500-mile freight run may be more expensive delivered than a slightly higher-priced regional manufacturer.

Current lead time. Lead times vary by season and by manufacturer backlog. The best panel price and quality means nothing if the manufacturer can’t deliver on the project schedule.

Application-specific expertise. For specialty applications — cold storage, military, healthcare — a manufacturer with specific experience in that application area is more valuable than a manufacturer who primarily serves residential markets.

For most residential projects

Among the major U.S. SIP manufacturers — Thermocore, SIPs of America, Eco Panel, AFM R-Control — product quality differences at equivalent specification are smaller than the differences in delivered cost based on project location. For standard residential specifications, comparing delivered cost and current lead time from two or three regionally appropriate manufacturers is the right approach.

For commercial and specialty projects

Application-specific expertise matters more. Permatherm for cold storage and specialty facing applications. Manufacturers with federal procurement documentation for government projects. The intro call with a SIP consultant provides project-specific manufacturer recommendations based on the actual application, location, and timing of the project.
