A SIP manufacturer’s panel recommendation is trustworthy for facts about their own product. It is not trustworthy as a comparison of their product against competitors, or as a recommendation of the optimal specification for a project where another manufacturer’s product would be better suited.
What manufacturers know well
Manufacturers know their own panels — the technical specifications, the structural performance data, the installation requirements, and the applications where their product performs well. Their sales and technical staff can answer specific questions about their product accurately. When the question is “how does your 6.5″ EPS panel perform in Climate Zone 5,” the manufacturer’s answer is reliable.
Where manufacturer advice has limits
Manufacturers cannot objectively compare their product to a competitor’s. They will not tell you that a different manufacturer’s panel is better suited to your application. They will not recommend a thinner, less expensive panel from their own line when a thicker, more profitable one is within the range of defensible specification. These are not dishonest behaviors — they are the natural result of the commercial relationship between a manufacturer and a customer.
The one question to always ask a manufacturer
Ask: “Is there a specific type of project or application where your panel would not be the best choice, and what would you recommend for that application?” A manufacturer who answers this question honestly — naming application types where their product is not optimal — is operating with a level of candor that distinguishes them from manufacturers whose answer to every question confirms that their panel is the right choice. Honest manufacturers acknowledge their product’s limitations; that honesty extends to their overall recommendation quality.
The independent alternative
An independent consulting engagement is specifically designed to provide the manufacturer-agnostic recommendation that manufacturers cannot provide. The consulting fee is the cost of receiving independent advice rather than manufacturer-filtered advice. For projects where the panel selection decision is consequential — large residential custom homes, commercial applications, specialty projects — the investment in independent recommendation is consistently worth more than it costs.
