There is no single best SIP panel. The right panel for a cold storage facility in Alabama is wrong for a custom home in Minnesota, which is wrong for a military installation in California. The following breakdown reflects recommendations based on direct project experience across application types.
Residential custom home (Climate Zones 4–6)
Core: EPS. Thickness: 6.5″ walls, 10.25″–12.25″ roof. Manufacturer: Any of the major U.S. residential manufacturers (Thermocore, SIPs of America, Eco Panel, AFM R-Control) based on delivered cost and lead time for the specific project location. The specification differences between residential manufacturers at equivalent specification are smaller than the freight cost differences based on location.
Cold storage and food processing
Core: Polyurethane. Thickness: 6.5″ for above-freezing applications, 8.25″–10.25″ for frozen storage. Manufacturer: Permatherm or specialty cold storage SIP manufacturers with proven cold storage track records and appropriate facing options. The specialty application demands manufacturer expertise beyond what standard residential manufacturers provide.
Military and government
Core: EPS (standard) or specialty configurations for ballistic applications. The manufacturer selection for military projects is driven primarily by: Buy American compliance documentation, manufacturer qualification for federal procurement, and the specific technical requirements of the project. Thermocore and AFM R-Control have historically maintained the documentation infrastructure required for federal projects; confirm current qualification status for the specific project.
Residential in extreme cold (Climate Zones 7–8)
Core: EPS at 10.25″+ for walls, or polyurethane at 6.5″–8.25″ where wall thickness is constrained. The higher R-value demand in extreme cold climates makes both options viable; the choice depends on the wall thickness budget and the relative cost of EPS thickness vs. polyurethane premium in the specific location.
Drive-thru and retail prototyping
Core: EPS at standard thickness for the climate zone. Manufacturer: Based on the geographic distribution of the building program. For a national retail chain building in 20 states, a manufacturer with broad national distribution and volume pricing capability is more valuable than one with the lowest unit price in a single region.
