SIP Panels vs Stick Frame: Which Is Better?

For energy performance, construction speed, and air tightness: SIP panels. For design flexibility, contractor availability, and familiarity in the construction industry: conventional stick frame. The right choice depends on which of those factors matters most for the specific project.

Energy performance comparison

A nominally R-19 batt-insulated stick-frame wall performs at approximately R-12 to R-14 whole-wall when the thermal bridging of the wood studs is accounted for — studs conduct heat at roughly five times the rate of the surrounding insulation and occur every 16 to 24 inches. A nominally R-21 SIP panel wall performs at approximately R-19 to R-20 whole-wall, because thermal bridging occurs only at panel splines spaced 4 to 8 feet apart.

Air tightness is an even larger differentiator. Conventional construction with aggressive air sealing typically achieves 3 to 5 ACH50 on blower door testing. Well-installed SIP construction routinely achieves 0.5 to 2.0 ACH50. Air infiltration that accounts for 30 to 40 percent of heating load in a conventional house may account for 5 to 15 percent in a SIP house.

Construction speed comparison

A 2,500 sf residential structure can be paneled in 2 to 4 days by an experienced SIP crew. Conventional framing of the same structure takes 2 to 4 weeks. The shell is weathertight faster, interior trades can start earlier, and construction financing carrying costs are lower for the duration of the framing phase.

Cost comparison

SIP panel material cost is higher than conventional framing materials. Total installed cost — accounting for the framing, sheathing, and insulation that SIPs replace — is typically within 3 to 8 percent of conventional construction, with the gap narrowing in high-labor markets. Energy savings over 15 to 30 years typically recover the initial premium.

When stick frame is the better choice

Stick frame remains advantageous when: complex geometry requires framing solutions that SIP panels can’t accommodate; the local market has no experienced SIP contractors; the design calls for a highly irregular floor plan that would produce excessive panel waste; or the project timeline and budget make the SIP premium difficult to justify for the specific owner’s situation.

When SIP construction is clearly superior

Cold climates where energy performance drives significant long-term savings. Projects with tight construction schedules. Owners with a long planning horizon who will capture the energy savings over time. Commercial applications where thermal performance and construction speed have quantifiable economic value. Any project where the owner’s primary concerns are energy performance and air quality.
