A SIP consultant provides independent technical guidance on structural insulated panel construction — panel selection, specification, plans review, engineering stamps, contractor vetting, and construction oversight — with no financial stake in any manufacturer’s product or any contractor’s contract.
The short version: a SIP consultant tells you what panel fits your project and whether your plans and contractor will execute it correctly. The longer version follows.
The eight things a SIP consultant does
- Panel selection. Recommends the appropriate core material (EPS or polyurethane), thickness, and manufacturer for the specific project — accounting for climate zone, structural loads, budget, and application type. This recommendation is independent of manufacturer relationships.
- Value engineering. Reviews the current specification or plan for over-specification or waste. Identifies cost reductions that maintain or improve performance — typically 8 to 15 percent on residential projects.
- Architectural plan development. Develops or reviews plans for SIP-specific requirements — structural connections, spline layout, chase routing, and opening accuracy — before panels are ordered.
- Engineering stamps. Provides stamped structural drawings valid for building permit submission in all 50 states.
- Spec writing. Writes the panel specification that governs what panels are ordered, from whom, and how they are installed — eliminating contractor substitution decisions.
- Contractor vetting. Evaluates the proposed SIP contractor’s actual installation experience before a contract is signed.
- Project management. Coordinates the panel-specific elements of construction — order management, delivery scheduling, and installation milestone oversight.
- Site inspections. Conducts scheduled on-site evaluations at structural, air barrier, and delivery milestones, with written reports.
What a SIP consultant does NOT do
- Sell panels — no manufacturer affiliation, no product commissions
- Install panels — consulting only, no construction services
- Serve as a general contractor — SIP-specific scope only
- Provide architecture of record — plan development is advisory, not a stamped architectural drawing
Why this role exists
SIP construction decisions — panel type, manufacturer, contractor — are made without an independent advisor in most projects. The manufacturer recommends their panel. The contractor recommends the manufacturer they know. The homeowner or developer accepts those recommendations without a way to evaluate them. The result is predictable: projects built on the right idea with the wrong details.
Independent consulting closes that gap. It is the advisor who is paid for the right recommendation, not for selling a specific product.
