There are more than a dozen significant SIP panel manufacturers operating in the North American market. Their panels are not equivalent. Core materials differ. Dimensional tolerances differ. Facing options differ. Quality control processes differ. Lead times differ. The manufacturer that is right for a residential custom home in the Pacific Northwest is not necessarily right for a commercial cold storage facility in the Southeast or a military installation project requiring documented quality assurance.
Selecting a manufacturer without independent evaluation means selecting on price, proximity, or whoever the contractor has used before. None of those criteria reliably produces the best outcome for a specific project.
What manufacturer evaluation actually examines
Core material quality and consistency
EPS foam density varies between manufacturers and between production runs. Higher-density EPS provides better R-value stability, improved moisture resistance, and better long-term performance. Low-density EPS — which costs less to produce — is a common point of compromise in budget panel lines. Polyurethane formulations also vary in quality. Evaluating a manufacturer’s core material quality requires reviewing their product documentation and, in some cases, their quality control records.
Facing material and adhesion
Most SIP panels use OSB facing. OSB grade, thickness, and the adhesion process between facing and core are all variables. Delamination — the separation of the OSB facing from the foam core — is a failure mode that results from inadequate adhesion processes. It is not common in quality panel production, but it happens. Manufacturer evaluation includes reviewing their adhesion process and any documented warranty claims related to delamination.
Dimensional accuracy and tolerances
SIP panels are precision components. A panel that is out of square or dimensionally inconsistent adds labor cost at installation and creates air leakage at joints. Manufacturers with tight dimensional tolerances and consistent quality control produce panels that install faster and perform better. Tolerance documentation is a reasonable request in manufacturer evaluation — quality manufacturers provide it.
Lead times and capacity
SIP panel lead times range from two weeks to twelve weeks depending on the manufacturer, their current production backlog, and the complexity of the order. A manufacturer with a six-week lead time and a project that needs panels in four weeks is not a viable choice, regardless of price. Manufacturer selection accounts for lead time against project schedule — a constraint that is often ignored until it becomes a problem.
Geographic service area
Panel freight cost is significant and increases non-linearly with distance. A manufacturer producing excellent panels at a competitive price point who is 1,800 miles from the job site may not be competitive once freight is added. Geographic service area evaluation includes freight cost modeling for the specific project location.
Technical support capability
Quality SIP manufacturers provide technical support — panel layout assistance, installation guidance, and problem resolution when field issues arise. Some manufacturers have dedicated technical staff. Others have a salesperson who handles technical questions on the side. The difference matters when an installation crew has a question at 7 AM on a Friday before a panel lift.
