Eco Panel SIPs, when installed correctly and protected by appropriate cladding and vapor management, perform well over the long term. The foam core is chemically stable; the OSB facing, properly protected, is very durable. Long-term performance issues in SIP buildings are almost always installation or moisture management failures — not material degradation of correctly manufactured panels.
What long-term performance looks like
A well-installed Eco Panel SIP home, inspected 15 to 20 years after construction, shows no meaningful degradation in thermal performance — the EPS R-value is stable, the air barrier is intact where properly detailed, and the structural performance of the panel assembly is undiminished. This is consistent with the material properties of EPS foam and properly bonded OSB facing: they do not degrade under normal service conditions.
What creates long-term performance problems
Long-term performance problems in SIP buildings are traceable to specific installation or design failures, not to the panel material itself: moisture infiltration from cladding failures or inadequate vapor management that degrades the OSB facing; joint sealing deficiencies that allow ongoing air and moisture infiltration; or pest damage in foam exposed to moisture conditions that make the panel hospitable to carpenter ants or other wood-boring insects.
These failure modes are not Eco Panel-specific — they occur in SIP buildings from any manufacturer when the installation and moisture management details are not correctly executed. Correctly installed and maintained Eco Panel SIP buildings perform well over the full design life of the building.
The installation quality connection
Long-term performance in any SIP building is more strongly determined by installation quality than by manufacturer choice. An Eco Panel SIP building with excellent joint sealing and correct vapor management will outperform a higher-priced manufacturer’s panels installed with joint sealing deficiencies over any long-term horizon. Contractor vetting before hire and a construction milestone inspection during installation are the most reliable predictors of long-term SIP performance — more reliable than manufacturer selection alone.
